My Travels – The Places I Have Visited

Before I start with all the places I have visited in my life, first a bit of background information. I was born in Sydney Australia. My parents immigrated to Australia from The Netherlands in 1952. They returned to The Netherlands in 1966.

In those days flying was not as common as today and especially intercontinental. So, the common way to cross the oceans was with passenger ships. Nowadays you would call them cruise ships.

Our voyage back to The Netherlands from Sydney, Australia took 4 weeks. At that time, I was 11 years old and to me, it was an adventure sparking my interest in traveling the world.

Our voyage took us, starting from Sydney, to Wellington, New Zealand, to Papeete, Tahiti (French Polynesia), passing through the Panama Canal and stopping in Cristóbal, Panama. The next stop was Willemstad, Curaçao. After crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the last stop was Southampton, England. From there we took the train to Harwich and then the ferry to Rotterdam where the family was waiting to take us to Eindhoven, our destination.

Because of this experience, I wanted to see more of the world and the best way for me was to join the Royal Netherlands Navy, which I did in 1975. I had to retire due to age restrictions in 2007.
